Through my childhood years, going to work with my father on a local farm, and spending time in the garden with my mother I developed a love for the outdoors. I was always up a tree, chasing butterflies or watching the birds.
After meeting my husband Chris, we were very much into ‘grow your own’ and trying to live a greener lifestyle, reusing and recycling where ever we could. We rented a couple of allotments just down the road from our first home to grow our own vegetables and keep some chickens. I enjoyed cooking, baking and learnt to knit. After getting my first small flock of rare breed sheep I learnt to spin, enabling me to create yarn from their wool. ‘Homemade’ is a big thing for me!
Fast forward a few more years and my love for the outdoors and ‘living the good life’ has helped me find my way into the perfect job. I now find myself as an organic farmer, living and working in the beautiful surroundings of Charnwood Forest in the heart of Leicestershire, where we keep cattle, sheep and a flock of hens for eggs.
Though I don’t have very much in the way of leisure time these days, I enjoy learning new skills and back in 2019 I decided that I would like to try my hand at soap making, after all, we get through plenty of it working hard on the farm! After doing some research and purchasing some great books I had the confidence to give it a go. My first batch of honey and lavender soap looked and smelt fantastic and best of all, I HAD MADE IT! (Even if the kitchen did look like a bomb had hit it).
Another couple of homemade batches under my belt and I began to wonder if it was something that I could take further and incorporate into the farm business. I wanted to take things to the next level and enrolled myself into some formal soapmaking tuition.
Inspired by the
beauty of our farmland and the natural ingredients at my fingertips, Home Farm
Heritage soaps was born.
In keeping with my rural surroundings and organic farming practices my aim is to produce beautiful, honest, handmade soap using natural ingredients only.
We support other ethical suppliers when we purchase our organically certified ingredients, but my aim is to grow and wild harvest on the farm the bulk of my botanicals used. Goat milk and honey from some of the farm residents also feature. We’ve tried to create a sustainable product that’s considerate to the environment right down to our packaging. Our cardboard soap boxes are made from recycled paper that are printed on using vegetable based inks.
The water used in my recipes is collected from a spring in our own woodland, fresh for every batch of soap made. This water is laboratory tested to ensure its cleanliness and purity. Home Farm Heritage soaps are made right here at the farm by us.
